Things You Should Not Do In a Chemistry Lab

Following are the things you should avoid while working in a chemistry lab

1. Work Without a Lab Coat, Goggles, Gloves, and Proper Shoes

     Playing with chemicals is quite a fascinating thing to do, but it may cost a lot if proper protocol is not followed. This includes, wearing a lab coat which saves your clothes from acids, other caustic chemicals and even fire. Goggles save your eyes from splash of chemicals and fumes. Note wearing gloves may cause damage to your skin due to contact with hazardous chemicals. Wearing open shoes may harm you in case of spillage or an accidental splashing of acids and solvents.

2. Add Water into Acids

Never add water to an acid, it may splash. Adding water to acid makes a concentrated solution which is more likely to splash out and damage your skin. Always add acid into water, as it makes a dilute acid solution.

3. Heat Organic Solvents on Burner

Organic solvents are highly flammable and should be kept away from fire. Never heat them on a burner.

4. Smell Liquids Directly

Never smell liquids with nose directly above the bottle, flask or beaker. Always use your hand to fan the vapours while smelling.

5. Pipette by Mouth

Always use a pipette filler to suck liquids. Sucking with mouth is quite dangerous.

6. Not using a fume hood

Never carry out a reaction without a fume hood. This will help you be safe from hazardous fumes as well as avoid a huge damage in case of an accident.

7. Taste Anything

Never try to taste anything in the lab, may it be NaCl.
